Parshat Ki Tavo alludes to the fact that every day we have a choice to make. The third Torah portion says, on this day, we have chosen Hashem to be our God and on this day, Hashem has chosen us to be His people. We can choose God or not!

What does it mean to choose God? While God is everywhere and knows our innermost deep thoughts, He has given us free will, so we can choose to follow the Torah. By following Torah values and mitzvot, we choose Hashem. We are different from all other nations and even on days when we don’t see that in ourselves, God does.

Now in the month of Elul, we can see this message clearly. We tell Hashem that we have sinned and that we are sorry. We tell Him that we haven’t been faithful, yet You, God, are always there. Not only were You there, but we ask for Hashem to continue to be there, despite our actions. We ask Hashem to choose us and forget our mistakes. May we all receive our teshuva, repentance, by choosing the way of Hashem and may we choose Hashem every day!
