Sunday, April 27th, was a busy and exciting day for the second grade boys of MGBL. The day started at 9 a.m. with four teams playing for the title of league champs.
In two exciting semi-final games, Koby Wolk, Eytan Kirschenbaum and the Bnei Yeshurin Boys lost to Meridian Capital Group. Shay Fields, the twin towers of Lopkin, and team Richards Manufacturing fell to team Citibank. And then there were two….
Citibank and Meridian had split the season series and so the fans knew it was in for a thriller.
Noah Fischman got the Meridian team off to a good start with 4 first-quarter points, making it 6-5 at the end of the first quarter. Despite a tremendous effort by Zachary Ciment and the Heumannn boys, JJ Waldman and MVP Shmoozie Rosen scored for Citibank to take a 15-14 lead into the half.
The third quarter was a defensive battle and Citibank was up 20-16 going into the fourth.
In the fourth, team Citibank turned it up yet again to come out the winner.
An observer noted that as we approach the 6th yahrzeit of Mitch Gross, a”h, he is probably smiling ear to ear as he watches these games from shamayim—“to see these boys playing ball, the right way.” The sportsmanship of the players and coaches is what makes the league great and a fitting legacy for a man who is much missed by all of Bergen County.
