WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023 the terrorist organization Hamas launched a coordinated series of attacks against the State of Israel and its citizens; and
WHEREAS, this barbaric attack occurred on a Holy Day and close to the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War; and
WHEREAS, terrorists launched over 5,000 rockets from the Gaza strip into the State of Israel; and
WHEREAS, heavily armed terrorists attacked defenseless citizens celebrating Shabbat and the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah; and
WHEREAS, the United States and the State of Israel have been allies and partners since 1948 in their shared values of peace and justice; and
WHEREAS United States President Biden along with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement stating, “We make clear that the terrorist actions of Hamas have no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned. There is never any justification for terrorism. In recent days, the world has watched in horror as Hamas terrorists massacred families in their homes, slaughtered over 200 young people enjoying a music festival, and kidnapped elderly women, children, and entire families, who are now being held as hostages”: and
WHEREAS, the State of Israel has responded to the attacks with a declaration of war against Hamas; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Englewood, the State of New Jersey and the United States have expressed their condemnation at this unprovoked attack which has resulted in hundreds of deaths of Israeli civilians, American citizens and citizens throughout the world: and
WHEREAS, many residents of the City of Englewood have visited Israel, have family and friends in Israel, support philanthropic causes in Israel and yearn for universal peace; and
WHEREAS, as a City we mourn for all the victims of these terrorist attacks by Hamas and the escalation of the conflict caused by this terrorist group; and
WHEREAS, people of the City of Englewood believe that the residents of the State of Israel deserve peace and security; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council and the City of Englewood stands with the people of Israel in this hour of need and condemns terrorist attacks against Israel and its citizens.
