Community Comes Together for Public Menorah Lighting in Highland Park

Children and parents watch the menorah lighting.

The cold weather and the need to prepare for Shabbat did not deter the more than 100 members of the Jewish community who came together on the first night of Chanukah for a public lighting of the menorah in an event promoted by Main Street Highland Park and coordinated by Michael Beberman, owner of Cyber Knight Computers in Highland Park. The event was cosponsored by Mordy’s Bakery and 1640 WJPR radio, and DJ Michael Greenberg of the Kol Yehudim radio show provided music for the occasion. Rabbi Shmulie Green, director of student outreach for the Tikvah Fund (based in New York), offered a dvar Torah and then led everyone in the brachot for the first night before lighting the candles. And of course, there were dreidels, gelt and sufganiot for everyone.

(l-r) Highland Park council member Jason Postelnik, Mayor Elsie Foster, council member Matthew Hale and council president Matt Hersh enjoy sufganiot together at the event.
