Rinat to Host Author of ‘The Yellow Bird Sings’

On Sunday, October 25, at 8:30 p.m., Congregation Rinat Yisrael will be hosting, over Zoom, an event with Jennifer Rosner, author of the acclaimed novel “The Yellow Bird Sings.” The novel is about a Jewish mother and her young daughter, a musical prodigy, who hide together in Poland during World War II. This debut novel depicts the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter, and how art and imagination can help one overcome overwhelming challenges. Rosner, who has a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford, will discuss the extensive research she did as part of her work on the book, including interviews with “hidden children,” and visits to a convent in Poland where Jewish children were hidden, and to “Violins of Hope,” in Tel Aviv, a collection of war-salvaged violins.

The book is riveting and beautifully written and has received rave reviews. It has close to 400 reviews and 4 ½ stars on Amazon. In the New York Times, Mary Beth Keane, the author of “Ask Again, Yes,” wrote “This is an absolutely beautiful and necessary novel, full of heartbreak but also hope, about the bond between mother and daughter, and the sacrifices made for love.” Hadassah Magazine noted that “Rosner has created nuanced characterizations and character development that distinguish this book from other Holocaust novels,” and that “The Yellow Bird Sings is a riveting page-turner that will delight music lovers and please members of any book club.” Longtime Rinat member Susan Richmond, owner of Susan Richmond Hats/The Doily Lady stated, “This wonderful book touched me to my core and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to hear Jennifer Rosner speak.”

The event is free to the public, and one can participate without having read the book.
