NNJ Holocaust Center and Keter Torah to Present ‘The Rabbi of Buchenwald’ Tisha B’Av Program

The program will pay tribute to the legacy of Rabbi Hershel Schacter, z”l.

(Courtesy of NNJ Holocaust Memorial & Education Center) The Northern New Jersey Holocaust Memorial & Education Center and Congregation Keter Torah invite you to a meaningful and enriching Tisha B’Av book launch/ experience featuring inspiring insights by Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter and author Dr. Rafael Medoff, who will speak about the transformative experience of Rabbi Hershel Schacter, z”l, who was a military chaplain with the U.S. Army, liberating the inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1945.

After liberation, Rabbi Schacter chose to remain in the camp for the next two and a half months, immersing himself in the despair engulfing the survivors of the Holocaust in order to help them rebuild their shattered lives. The book describes how a face-to-face encounter with the Holocaust transformed the life of an American rabbi and how he, in turn, helped transform the American Jewish community. It’s the remarkable story of an extraordinary man and how he helped shape Jewish history.

“This program is a wonderful example of the important Holocaust educational programs that we have been conducting throughout the year as we raise money for our Memorial & Education Center,” said co-chair Steve Fox. “We plan to have many more programs like this for the community during the upcoming year, as well as a Virtual Reality Holocaust project that is currently in the works. We look forward to more communal support to help make the Center a reality.”

Proceeds will benefit the Capital Campaign of the Northern New Jersey Holocaust Memorial & Education Center.
