Frisch Baseball Team Wins Third Consecutive Championship

The Frisch Cougars baseball team won their third consecutive Yeshiva Championship on Father’s Day, Sunday June 19 at the beautiful Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona, New York. They defeated TABC in the finals for the second year in a row, this year by a score of 4-0.

Led by junior pitching phenom Jake Lebovitch (3-1), the Frisch Cougars shut down the TABC offense on 2 hits, striking out 11 and walking only 2 on a 104 pitch masterpiece. On the offense, Frisch started the game with a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line by leadoff hitter Raphe Shankman ‘16, followed by a walk to Frisch batting average leader (.417), Isaac Seelenfreund ‘16.

Cleanup hitter RJ Fischer ‘17 then doubled in two runs to get the scoring started and put pressure clearly on TABC from the first inning. RJ then scored on a sun-assisted error by the right fielder off the bat of Jordan Feigenblum ‘16 and the lead extended to 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Seelenfreund, one of two Frisch captains (the other being Jared Caplan ‘16), tripled to center field and scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0, the final score.

The Frisch coaching staff headed by first year coach Bruce Horowitz, who was the team’s statistician for the past eight years, along with assistant coach and GM John Ryan, first year coach David Ruditzky and part time coach Daniel Horowitz ‘11 guided the team to an 11-1 record in the Yeshiva league (including playoffs) and a 15-4 record overall.

The Frisch team also won the Columbus Tournament, playing against the same TABC squad in the finals one month earlier and winning all five games over three days.

The Cougars credit Ed Mills, the Yeshiva Commissioner, for finding such a fantastic venue for the championship game.

Although Frisch are losing 7 seniors (5 starters), they still expect to compete next year and look forward to another successful season.
