Cougars Top the Storm in Varsity Playoff Preview

Having just watched their JV counterparts lose a game for the first time in two years, the Varsity Cougars had a tall task before them in their last regular season game of the year against their Bergen County rival, the TABC Storm. The Storm were coming off a victory over Frisch two weeks ago in Paramus.

Playing tough man to man from the get go, Frisch held TABC star center Yehoshua Zirman in check for most of the first half, and, with very balanced scoring from eight players, they used a 15-0 run at the end of the second quarter to push out to a comfortable 33-19 lead as the teams went to the locker room. The teams see-sawed back and forth in the third stanza, with Frisch extending their lead to 44-29, and the game headed into the fourth.

In front of their fans on senior night, there was no way TABC would not make a run, and did they ever.  With Seniors Alex Hirt and Zirman leading the way, the Storm, well, stormed back to cut the Frisch lead to 59-52 with 2:33 left. But the Cougars would not be blown away.  With Seniors Justin Hod and Eli Scharlat each hitting 5 free throws in the last two minutes to silence the boisterous home crowd, the Cougars extended their lead and pulled away for the victory by a final score of 70-59.

Hod led the Cougars with 27 points (three 3-balls, 12-17 from the line) along with Scharlat who hit for 12 (10 in the fourth quarter and 6-7 from the line). For their efforts, the Cougars earned the right to play the Storm again in the first round of the Yeshiva League playoffs, next week.
