Court Acquits Palestinian Terrorist of Murder in Joseph’s Tomb Attack Case

(JNS.org) Israel’s Samaria military court Tuesday sentenced Palestinian terrorist Nawad Fad to six years in prison for his role in a 2011 terror attack at Joseph’s Tomb that killed a 25-year-old man and injured four more Israelis.

The terrorist was acquitted of the murder of Ben-Yosef Livnat, a father of four, due to reasonable doubt. Fad was convicted of obstruction of justice for tampering with evidence at the scene of the crime.

In 2011, Palestinian Authority (PA) police officers responsible for administering security at Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus opened fire on three cars driven by Jewish worshippers en route to the holy site. Following the shooting, Palestinian security forces apprehended the four police officers involved in the attack.

After the PA released the suspects, the IDF and the Shin Bet security agency arrested three of the Palestinian officers in 2013. A Shin Bet investigation revealed the suspects had coordinated stories; the Palestinian officers justified the killings by claiming they believed the Jewish worshippers were attacking them.

The deceased victim’s aunt, Former Israeli Culture and Sport Minister Limor Livnat, expressed outrage regarding the military court’s verdict, calling it “inconceivable.”

“The court showed incredible empathy towards the assassin. The family was shocked to hear the verdict, which contains a series of serious and inexplicable mistakes,” Livnat said.

The Livnat family’s attorney, Haim Bleicher, expressed similar sentiments, saying the defendant “explicitly admitted that he had shot at the victim’s car and even admitted that he had hit him.”

“In addition, a bullet was found in the victim’s vehicle that matched the shooting trajectory described by the defendant in his confession,” said Bleicher.
