(Courtesy of Da’ehu) Would you like the job of pressing olives to light the temple menorah? Children of all ages joined Da’ehu’s second community education event to learn hands-on the meaning of שמן זית זך and what it takes to get those first drops of oil—a lot of work and a lot of olives. Da’ehu, as in “Know Him in all of your ways,” is a Montessori school in the process of forming in Passaic, and one of its main objectives is out-of-the-box, hands-on learning. Da’ehu founder and president Gershom Tave led the children in pressing the olives first by hand and then in a press. By the end of the event the children seemed to agree that, although they had fun, they would stick to oil from the store and leave the pressing to the professionals.
