Teaneck Jewish Center to Host Big Bread Burn

The eighth annual Big Bread Burn at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, 70 Sterling Place, a pre-Passover community-wide event, is expected to draw more than one thousand adults and children from Teaneck and the surrounding communities on Friday, April 3, 2015 from 9:30—11:40 a.m.

Appropriately named the Annual Joy and Al Amsel Memorial Community Passover Biur Chametz Program, popularly known as the Big Bread Burn, it serves as a memorial tribute to the Amsels. For over three decades they invited community members to gather in their backyard around their fire pit on Erev Pesach (before the start of Passover) to share in the ritual act of Biur Chametz, the ceremonial burning of a token amount of leaven in advance of the Passover holiday, which begins that evening.

The Teaneck Fire Safety Trailer and a Fire Department engine truck will be on hand, along with personnel from the Fire Department, to provide a complimentary fire safety learning experience for young children and their families. Once again, the kosher for Passover chocolate lollypops, donated by Streit’s Matzoh Company, will be distributed along with junior fire chief hats for the children.

The event is co-sponsored by Yeshiva Heichal Hatorah, and Congregations Beth Aaron, Young Israel of Teaneck, Netivot Shalom, Ohr Saadya, B’nai Yeshurun, Rinat Yisrael and other community organizations. Chametz for burning should be placed in paper bags, only. Please do not put anything in plastic bags. The latest time for burning chametz is 11:40 a.m. Ample parking is available on the streets surrounding the Center as its parking lot will be closed to accommodate this event.
