Hamilton, NJ – The New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP) presented its E.C. Nurock Award to Jack S. Mermelstein, OD, of Fair Lawn, New Jersey during the organization’s September 21st general membership meeting and awards ceremony at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In 1978, Dr. Mermelstein began focusing much of his time on geriatric long-term care with privileges in three nursing homes in central and southern New Jersey. Since then, he has obtained consulting privileges at over 200 nursing homes throughout the state and also serves as consultant staff for 10 long-term care skilled nursing joint commission accredited facilities and as a consultant to the New Jersey Commission for the Blind.
His attention to the geriatric population, through nursing home, hospital and private home visits, provides consistent, high quality care to patients who may otherwise be unable to obtain the proper eye and vision care from an optometric physician.
In addition to three decades of membership in the NJSOP, Dr. Mermelstein is a member of the American Optometric Association and an associate member of the Heath Care Association of New Jersey.
Dr. Mermelstein earned his optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry (Memphis, TN) in 1976 before opening his first private practice in Belleville, NJ. His current practice, Resident Eye Care Associates was established in 1989, and employs eight additional optometric physicians.
