My name is Sylvia Berger. Many of you know me as a grandmother, mother, wife, long-term member of our synagogue and volunteer in this community for over 40 years. You may remember me as a parent of four in Yavneh Academy (Tamar, Ilan, Ari and Shiri), as co-owner of This Is It Boutique in Englewood, as Fair Lawn Hadassah’s past president or from my position as assistant principal and director of admission at Gerrard Berman Solomon Schechter school in Oakland, for nearly 20 years. It has been my pleasure to serve my community and it’s been my privilege to call its members my friends and family.
As a community member, I am reaching out to you now in my time of need. In recent months I was surprised to learn that I am in need of a kidney transplant. I know this may come as a shock to you—believe me, it was quite a shock to me and my family, as well. My doctors told me that having a kidney transplant within this year would be my best chance for long-term kidney health. Friends, if anyone has ever been interested in pursuing the mitzvah of pikuach nefesh—saving someone’s life—then consider viewing this as the ultimate mitzvah opportunity. My kidneys are failing and all it takes is one brave and kind soul to make all the difference in the world.
If, while reading this plea, you doubt whether you could even be a “good match,” I invite you to believe in the possibility. If, while reading this plea, you’re thinking that this speaks to your higher calling, then please visit the Mt. Sinai donor website for more information.
Your interest and willingness to consider this commitment is already appreciated more than you know. May you be blessed to serve as inspiration for your communities and as ambassadors for all of humanity.
With gratitude and gratefulness,
Sylvia Berger
