No, it’s not a religious holiday, but we think it’s appropriate this Thanksgiving for American Jews to recognize the tremendous support given the Jewish community and Israel by our incredible nation.
There doesn’t seem to be a day that has gone by in recent months when the U.S. doesn’t stand up for Israel in the United Nations, especially from the voice of outgoing ambassador Nikki Haley. Of that we are so thankful. Indeed, as recently as Monday Haley criticized the United Nations for calling on Israel in the same breath as Hamas to show “restraint.”
We are thankful for the administration’s support of Israel and its right to defend itself, especially in recent days when Hamas has chosen to launch a fusillade of rockets at Israel’s Southern Negev towns.
And though the sadness cannot be measured, we are still thankful for the outpouring of support from communities Jewish and non-Jewish in the aftermath of the tragic Pittsburgh synagogue shootings.
Whether you find time as a family to have a turkey dinner, watch a football game on TV or get up at some unreasonable hour to catch a “Black Friday” sale, we ask that you enjoy one another’s company, and that you appreciate the opportunity that Jews in the United States have to take part in the freedom that the United States offers.
And when this American national holiday is over, invite your guests to stay a bit longer and enjoy Shabbat together.
Because in this country we can, with conviction and freedom.
Happy Thanksgiving.
