One community. One commemoration. One year.
(Courtesy of JFNNJ) On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel, killing nearly 1,200 innocent civilians, taking over 250 hostages, and shattering the global Jewish community’s sense of safety. As we approach the one-year anniversary of that dark day, 101 people remain in captivity.
This attack marked a significant turning point in modern Jewish history—not only for the tragic loss of life but also for the events that followed.
On Monday, October 7, Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, together with community partners, will hold a commemoration to honor the fallen, celebrate heroism in the face of darkness, and reaffirm our community’s unwavering commitment to Israel.
The event will bring together the broader Jewish community, local religious and civic leaders, and special guests from Israel. Special speakers include a teenager who survived an attack on a kibbutz, a relative of a hostage, and an Israeli sharing their experiences from that day.
Jason Shames, CEO of Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, stated: “It’s heartbreaking that, a year later, innocent people are still being held hostage, and Israel continues to face threats to its existence. We stand united in calling for the safe return of those still captive and affirm Israel’s undeniable right to exist in peace and security. This commemoration is a reminder that we must never stop fighting for our people’s safety and freedom.”
An Israeli resident shared her personal experience: “Every day, I live in fear. I constantly worry about my children—how do you explain the sirens in the middle of the night, or why they can’t play outside like other kids? It’s terrifying, but it’s our reality. Knowing that people across the ocean care about us and stand with us gives my family strength.”
The event will take place on October 7 at 7 p.m.. For security reasons, the location will be shared on October 6.
