I was encouraged to read this week’s editorial (“The Winner Is…America!” Nov. 5, 2020), which celebrated the high turnout in the 2020 election and what that means for the future of our democracy. Nevertheless, it was disappointing that even within this positive context, the editors couldn’t resist taking one last shot at those readers who happen not to share their political views.
In particular, the editors complained that critics of a recent front-page piece by Caroline Glick “didn’t even read the article before condemning us” for having a right-wing bias. For the benefit of those critics who apparently didn’t read Ms. Glick’s article (“American Jewry’s Fateful Hour” Oct. 21, 2020), below are a few choice quotes that may illustrate why her views were deemed offensive by so many of the Link’s readers:
“Anti-Semitism runs through Democrat politics, policies and behavior across a spectrum of issues…anti-Semitism has become an undeniable and central characteristic of the Democrat Party…Biden can be expected to turn a blind eye to the growing anti-Semitism in his own political camp.”
It’s hard to take seriously the editors’ claim that printing this sort of hateful, one-sided rhetoric reflected an “even-handed” approach to political reporting. It’s perhaps even harder to believe their assertion that this article was published after a bipartisan editorial team decided that it presented interesting thoughts on polling error and bias.
