Fair Lawn’s Shomrei Torah to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Fifty years ago, a pioneering group of men and women had the idea to create an Orthodox synagogue in Fair Lawn, and then proceeded to change the Jewish landscape of Fair Lawn forever.

They sought a spiritual leader who would have a certain faith, character, vision, passion and compassion. The impossible became a reality. Their search ended when they found then-recently ordained Rabbi Benjamin Yudin and his wife, Shevi. Thus Congregation Shomrei Torah was born and thus began the transformation of Jewish Fair Lawn.

From a small, former private home and nucleus of families the shul has grown physically and exponentially and has spawned the formation of other area shuls. It has been a leader, an innovator, bringing significant contributions to the Jewish community. Shomrei Torah has given us a mikvah, an eruv, as well as a charity fund that has given away significant amounts of money to the needy.

We have been honored by the visits of some of the most revered rabbanim of our time. For over 40 years, Rabbi Yudin has given a weekly dvar Torah on the radio that is now listened to by thousands of people around the globe. His wife, Shevi, in her own intellectual, creative and caring way, has benefited and enhanced the entire Jewish community. Her Simchat Torah kiddush is renowned and appreciated by all who have had the privilege of attending. Many of the now important rabbinic leaders in the New York-New Jersey metro area, even some around the globe, were young boys who were inspired and influenced by Rabbi Yudin. We were very fortunate when, in 2010, Rabbi Andrew Markowitz, our associate rabbi, and his wife, Dr. Sarah Markowitz, became part of our family. Their dedication, creativeness and knowledge have been an inspiration and helped us grow in so many new ways.

Shomrei Torah “adopted” Maon, a city in Israel, and has benefited greatly from this symbiotic relationship. We have maintained this friendship for years.

Ten years ago, one of our congregants initiated Torah Tuesday, a program of regular Torah study on Tuesday mornings, led by Rabbis Yudin and Markowitz as well as other local rabbis. This incredible program has grown in stature and attendance, as well as to thrice-weekly sessions and special monthly programs

On June 5 at the Keter Torah (Roemer) Synagogue in Teaneck, the shul will be celebrating its golden anniversary by saluting and honoring the past presidents and those who led the men’s club and sisterhood. A video with highlights chronicling the past 50 years will be featured. Please join us at this momentous occasion. For more information and reservations, please call the shul at 201-791-7910.
