Father’s Day Soft Pretzels

Start Father’s Day Weekend off with this delicious treat of homemade soft pretzels!

  • 5 cups of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 4 tablespoons of margarine
  • 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup of baking soda
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • Coarse salt

1) Combine warm water, salt, sugar and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until the yeast starts to foam.

2) Pour yeast mixture into a large bowl with melted margarine and flour.

3) Remove the dough and coat the bowl in oil.

4) Add the dough back to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or damp cloth. Let sit for 1 hour.

5) Shape dough on lightly floured surface. I used the Hebrew letters for Abba.

6) Add baking soda to a pot of 8 cups of water and bring to a boil.

7) Place shaped dough onto a cooking turner and dunk each piece in boiling water for 25-30 seconds (maximum).

8) Use the cooking turner to shake off excess water and put the shapes onto a tray lined with parchment paper.

9) Mix egg wash with honey

10) Coat dunked dough with egg wash and honey mixture.

11) Generously sprinkle coarse salt onto the shapes.

12) Bake at 450 for 10 minutes until golden brown.

Let cool and enjoy with your favorite mustard!
