The Teaneck Republican Municipal Committee are strong advocates of the second amendment. We encourage those of sound mind and high moral character, who are physically, mentally and emotionally capable, to explore responsible firearm ownership by exercising one of the most sacred rights afforded to citizens of this great country.
While nothing here is to be construed as legal advice, here is our experience.
The first thing to learn about firearm licensing and self defense is that it is not like a driver’s license where you learn to drive in one state and can drive in any other state. Every single state has different laws, and what can be perfectly legal in one state can get you arrested by crossing one foot over into the next state.
In New Jersey, licensing is required for a shotgun, rifle and handgun.
Here is how the process in New Jersey works. We will break this down into two categories,
1) purchasing and 2) carrying.
Purchasing: To purchase a long gun, namely a rifle or shotgun, one must be 18, get fingerprinted, pass a background check, provide two personal references and obtain a firearm ID card (FID). This license lasts 10 years for those applying now and is supposed to be issued within 30 days of completing application.
To purchase a short gun, namely a pistol or handgun, one must be over 21 years old, have an FID and apply for a pistol purchase permit (the original FID application and pistol permit application can be submitted simultaneously).
To carry a handgun, one must have a permit to carry (PTC). To obtain a new PTC one must first obtain an FID and a pistol permit. You must purchase a pistol and a holster. Next you have to take a “qualification” course, which consists of one hour classroom “use of force” training and one hour range time. Next you complete the application, background check and provide four personal references. The application is supposed to be processed within 90 days.
Be certain to consult an attorney or licensed NRA instructor for current and accurate information.
Always remember, treat a gun as if it is loaded with live ammo at all times, even if you are certain it is unloaded. Never use a real gun as a toy, part of a prank or prop.
