This past Wednesday evening, the lunchroom at RYNJ was abuzz; over 200 people filled the room to capacity to enjoy a night of fun and interactive math games at the annual First Grade Family Math Night. Almost 100 first grade students, along with their parents and grandparents, began the night with an exciting worksheet that involved finding the correct addends. Then, students and the adults that accompanied them began to play one of the three entertaining games that were run by first grade faculty members Mrs. Burg, Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Kahn, Mrs. Landerer, Mrs. Nicolosi and Mrs. Schreiber: Two-Card War; How many Beans?; and Addition Tic-Tac-Toe. Strengthening their problem-solving and communication skills simultaneously, students thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities. Of course, one cannot forget about the jelly bean jar estimation contest. Rivky Geffner, 1G3, had the closest estimation and took home the grand prize: an entire jar of jelly beans! Students left with decks of cards in their hands and smiles on their faces.
