First graders at Tenafly Chabad Academy learned all about the election and voting process. Instead of voting for president, the children got to vote for the treat they would like for their next class party. The children were divided into campaign teams—Team Lollipop, Team Cookies and Team Chocolate. They created campaign posters and gave speeches to try to persuade their classmates as to why their choice was the best.
Each child entered the official voting booth to cast his or her secret ballot, and then proudly colored and put on their “I voted” sticker, along with a special voting sticker from Teach NJ. At the end of the election, the class counted up the votes in tallies. This time Lollipops won. They then discussed how they felt about the results, which included understanding that just like in an election, some people are happy with the winner, while others are disappointed that their choice lost. Of course, all the children were excited to be receiving a treat from their morot!
