Westchester Torah Academy first grade students have started a “magic carpet ride” around the world by reading books from different countries and cultures across the globe. After each story, the class locates the country on a large classroom map, measures how far it is from home and then compares all that they have in common with the people of those countries. The students made such insightful and compassionate comments. So far, they have explored the continent of Africa—visiting the countries Mali, Ghana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The students also had an opportunity to try millet, a grain commonly grown and used throughout Africa. After coming across it in their travels, they decided to give it a try!
