(Courtesy of Fleetwood Synagogue) Fleetwood Synagogue in Mount Vernon, New York celebrated Shavuot with two days of special activities to commemorate Zman Matan Torateinu.
On day one, the shul hosted its annual communal Shavuot lunch, cheekily referred to as Fleetwood Mac and Cheese. The shul enjoyed a landslide of dairy treats, including mac and cheese, cauliflower gratin, pesto, greek salad, and the mandatory assortment of cheesecakes. The weather was beautiful, allowing for refreshing al fresco dining outside.
During the rabbi’s shiur, the kids participated in a seven-part trivia game. Each round got them one step, representing one week, closer to winning—receiving the Torah. Questions ranged from asking the kids to name brachot, to naming mitzvot ben adam l’chavero, and mitzvot ben adam l’makom, encouraging them to think about the mitzvot they engage in on a daily basis.
The second day featured a decorate your own Har Sinai cupcake activity. Each child got their own cupcake to frost and then decorate with green sugar for the grass and multicolored sprinkles representing the colorful flowers (picture taken after Shavuot). Kids then enjoyed eating the mountains of sweets.
