Fogelman Visits Teaneck to Discuss Effect of Holocaust on Survivor Families

Teaneck—Breaking the Silence: The Generation After the Holocaust, an award winning film by Dr. Eva Fogelman, co-director of the International Study of the Organized Persecution of Children (ISOPC), a division of Child Development Research, will be shown Monday, March 24th  from 6.15 p.m.-8.30 p.m. at Jewish Family Service of Bergen and North Hudson, 1485 Teaneck Road. A discussion with Dr. Fogelman will follow.

A pioneer on the psychology of the generations of the Shoah, in 1976 Dr. Fogelman developed an intergenerational group of child survivors and Second Generation, and was also the director of of psychology and social issues at the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. She is a licensed psychologist, the Pulitzer-nominated author of Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust; contributing producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Liberators: Fighting on Two Fronts in World War II, and co-editor of Children During the Nazi Reign: Psychological Perspectives on the Interview Process.

She is currently editing, with others ,a book about the Kestenberg Holocaust Child Survivor Archives housed at Hebrew University—1500 oral histories compiled by ISOPC over the years and made available to scholars and researchers at the Abraham Hartman Institute for Contemporary Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.

The Kestenbergs and Dr. Fogelman were the first to create monthly gatherings of Holocaust child survivors in New York City that was then replicated in other cities around the U.S. and the world. Inspired by Myriam Abramowicz, a hidden child, the Kestenbergs and Dr. Fogelman organized the first conference for hidden children of the Holocaust and founded the Hidden Child Foundation-ADL. Their first child survivor group eventually became NAHOS in New York, which led to the creation of the international group, the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust and Descendants—which is holding its 2014 conference in Berlin in August.
