Former Egyptian Prisoner Speaks at BCHSJS

Students and parents at the Bergen County High School of Jewish Studies, and other members from the community at large, had the privilege of hearing speaker Hussein Aboubakr share his connection to Israel as a former Muslim and Egyptian prisoner. Mr. Aboubkar, brought to BCHSJS by StandWithUs (an international, non-profit organization dedicated to informing the public about Israel and to combating extremism and anti-Semitism), survived torture, his family disowning him and imprisonment for studying Hebrew. Now an American political asylee, Aboubakr calls himself a Zionist and travels to campuses and schools across the country to tell his story, explain how the Muslim world has become radicalized and to promote education and tolerance. Aboubakr’s talk was followed by a question and answer session. Students were mesmerized by Mr. Aboubakr’s personal story and impressed by his message.
