‘Freedom Song,’ a Musical About Addiction, to Be Performed in MetroWest

“Freedom Song,” a 50-minute musical about addiction in the Jewish community, will be performed twice in the Greater MetroWest NJ area. The first performance will be held on November 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the JCC of MetroWest, in West Orange, and the second will be held on November 5 at 11 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El of Westfield. All of the actors onstage are recovering addicts who spent time in recovery at Beit T’Shuvah, a residential addiction rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles. Beit T’Shuvah is unique in the field. It is a Jewish faith-based program that builds its recovery methodology on Jewish learning, Torah study and spiritual counseling from which it launches its clinical, medical and Twelve Step approaches.

Freedom Song uses the lens of a Passover seder and personal stories of recovery to highlight the struggles in a Jewish way. This presentation of the play demonstrates that our community is taking notice of the issue of addiction in the Jewish community and doing something to support those who are struggling. The program is free to the public, but registration is requested. Please contact Valerie Samuel at [email protected] or 973-929-3107.
