November 20th faced with the always-tough test of traveling to Ramaz and playing the JV Rams in close quarters in front of a vociferous crowd, the Frisch JV Cougars did what any self-respecting Manhattanite would do: they took the A-Train.
With slashing drives and twisting layups, So. F Captain Andrew (“A-Train”) Langer’s 29 points and 10 rebounds steamrolled the ram-tough Ramaz JV lead by sophomores Noah Greenwald and Josh Silberstein.
It was clear from the outset that the Rams would be the Cougars’ toughest test to date. The Rams held close in the first quarter, despite opening back-to-back three balls from So. Captains Noah Schechter and Mayer Scharlat and 7 points from Langer. When the period ended, Frisch was up 13-7.
Ramaz fought back in the second quarter, cutting the lead by one, to go in trailing only 23-16 after a floating buzzer beater. No team had been this close to the Frisch JV at halftime yet this season.
But the third quarter belonged to the Frisch press, anchored by sophomores Zach Cohen and Isaac Weinstock behind a bevy of guards up front.
With waves of pressure, Frisch kept the ball in the Ramaz backcourt for the majority of the stanza with a series of steals by Scharlat and layups by Langer, who had 11 in the period, and extended the lead to 40-23 heading into the fourth.
The last quarter saw an extended Frisch roster add to the lead, with So. G Josh Chesner (who also took a fierce and critical charge in the second period), Fr. F Zack Comet, and Cohen and Weinstock each adding a bucket. So. F Scott Levine hit a 3-ball to close out the scoring, with Frisch taking the challenging away game by a score of 54-35.
Langer’s 29 were bolstered by Schechter’s 11 (4 rebounds and 2 monster blocks), and Scharlat’s 7 (8 assists, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds) as Frisch pushed their record to 3-0 heading into a matchup with Hillel on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in Paramus.
