After another grueling season, the Frisch girls’ Varsity Soccer Championship run ended on May 28. The game saw a much anticipated match-up between Frisch and Central as both teams entered the game undefeated champions of their respective divisions. The Central squad had scored more goals during the regular so they were the favorites going in.
As soon as the team arrived at North Shore gym, one could feel the excitement in the air. During our warm ups we got our first glimpse of the opposition. Central’s goalie had cat-like reflexes and was stopping everything that came her way. Many of their players had solid footwork. We knew this was going to be a tough challenge, but felt confident that we could win.
The game got off to a slow start; it was a back and forth defensive struggle. In the second quarter, the game picked up and ended with Frisch leading 2-1 at the half. Both teams started the third quarter with renewed energy. Central tied the game at two, 30 seconds into the third quarter. Looking up and seeing the score tied was all the Frisch squad needed to get itself back into the correct mindset. They broke the tie with five minutes to go in the third and never looked back. Frisch finished with a 5-2 victory and another undefeated season.
This victory marked the fourth consecutive championship for Frisch and Coach Iozzia. It was also Coach John Iozzia’s last game (he will not be returning next season). This season was a great one, where everyone’s talents were shown and where everyone had the ability to give something to the team. Teammates became friends, not just players on a team. Having a connection is a big part of the game and by the end of the season, we all shared a love for soccer and a mutual feeling of respect and friendship that definitely furthered the success of the team.
I cannot express in words how amazing Coach Iozzia has been these past years, and we are so sad that he is leaving. Hopefully next year, even without him and without the seniors, the Frisch girls’ soccer team will have yet another successful season!
