Frisch Students Hear Story of Recovery From Hate

Last week, Yeshivat Frisch seniors heard from Shannon Foley Martinez, a former violent white supremacist who has spent the last two decades educating others about her experiences and working to rehabilitate individuals who are leaving the white supremacist community. She spoke about her early life, and the hopelessness, trauma, lack of purpose and complex factors relating to identity formation in her youth that motivated her (and that frequently motivates others) to join these hate groups. She also spoke about how she reclaimed her life through the help of a friend’s mother, who offered her stability along with a different vision for her future. A Q&A with students followed Martinez’s presentation.
