From the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee

The Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee unequivocally condemns Hamas’ unprovoked terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, which included the murders of at least 29 American citizens. Since then, many of us have been haunted by the horrific reports and images of depraved acts committed against grandparents (including Holocaust survivors), infants, and even entire families, as they slept in their beds, tried to protect their children, waited at bus stops, or danced at a music festival. As President Biden stated, “There is no justification for terrorism. There is no excuse.”

We remain deeply concerned about the fate of the reported more than 200 hostages Hamas is still holding captive, including American citizens, and join the calls for their immediate release. This is especially true given accounts of Hamas’ mistreatment of the captives, as well as Hamas’ threat that they will execute the hostages on camera.

We are also concerned for the well-being of Palestinian civilians, and recognize that Hamas must not be equated with Palestinians in general. Quoting President Biden again, “Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people’s right to dignity and self-determination. Its stated purpose is the annihilation of the State of Israel and the murder of Jewish people…. Hamas offers nothing but terror and bloodshed with no regard to who pays the price.”

We yearn for the day when all civilians who wish to live in freedom can do so, and urge all people of goodwill to reject terrorism and hatred in all its forms. Let us unite under the banner of our shared humanity and work to create conditions where peace can flourish.
