Gemara Is Hands-On at RPRY

To help illustrate the cases from the Mishnah and Gemara on Bava Kamma 55b, Rabbi Steven Miodownik brought a sheep in to his eighth grade class! (Well, not into the classroom—the sheep was kept in the playground!) Students were divided into teams and took turns acting out parts of the Mishnah and Gemara. For example, one such case encompasses a situation in which someone left a sheep not properly penned and the sheep then escaped and caused damage to someone else’s property. Who is responsible for these damages—the owner of the sheep or the person who last left the pen? Holding Hebrew signs that labeled the various cases, the students role played using the sheep, the pen and a thief costume! This hands on Torah education brought the Gemara to life in a way that RPRY students will remember!
