Genocide Did Occur in the Middle East, but Against the Jews, Not By the Jews

Genocide is the latest outrageous charge to be made by Israel- and Jew-haters today, with Israel accused of being the perpetrator. This is a deliberate cover-up of the fact that the Jews were actually the ones who were the victims of almost total genocide committed by Arabs and Muslims. Jews have had a long and often illustrious history throughout the ages in the Middle East, but due to a systematic cleansing campaign, have been almost entirely expelled in all Arab/Muslim lands. The only significant Jewish population center remaining today is in Israel itself.

The land encompassed by what is Israel today was only an established state twice in its entire 3,000+ year history. The first time it became a nation it was called “Eretz Yisrael” (the Land of Israel) in biblical times, and the second time as “Israel” in 1947. In between, it was part of, or administered by, a succession of rulers including the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic Caliphate, the Crusaders, the Ottoman Empire and, finally, part of the British mandate from the League of Nations.

During that entire diaspora period, the territory of present day Israel has been continuously inhabited by Jews as well as other people. The Jews also lived in large communities in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Ethiopia, among other Middle East lands. They had sometimes prosperous and sometimes poverty-stricken communities, but they always lived there.

During the mid-twentieth century period, Jews in the Arab/Muslim lands of the Middle East faced a similar, if somewhat less savage, fate than Hitler’s Holocaust. Being labeled “infidels,” they were subjected to poor treatment and severe discrimination, and left, or were driven out of, all Arab/Muslim lands. These became more Judenrein than even after Hitler’s genocide in Europe. In this connection it is well to remember that the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem went to Germany in 1941 in the midst of the Holocaust to meet Hitler to discuss the elimination of Jews in Arab lands also. I don’t have exact figures, but believe that there were over 1,000,000 Jews who lived in Arab/Muslim lands in 1947 and less than 50,000 now remain. Their only refuge in the Middle East was Israel, where even here, the Arabs/Muslims have tried, and continue to try, to eradicate the last vestige of Jewish existence in that region.

That is the history of genocide in the Middle East, but it was committed against the Jews, not by the Jews.
