Mr Starcher’s response, “Concern About Germany is Misplaced” (April 3, 2025), to my letter, “Germany Should Worry Us” (March 27, 2025), reflected what I fear is the dominant perception in our community. He says that I mistakenly accept the inaccurate media depiction of AfD. Since the European Union shuns the party for its extremist views, I’m going to posit that they are not all just following inaccurate media portrayals.
He also says that Germany’s army is years away from being a threat. That is certainly true, but that is why now is the time to nip the issue in the bud. In the 1930s, Winston Churchill warned the world of the impending danger of Germany, while Neville Chamberlain followed a policy of appeasement. At the time, Churchill was ridiculed and Chamberlain was praised. History now views Churchill as being prescient and Chamberlain is remembered as a cautionary tale of how foolhardy it is to appease evil powers.
