Rachel Kupfer, longtime local business owner of On the Table and new Teaneck Country Club resident, wants to give back; this time in the form of a sidewalk sale. Five days filled with sales, music and fun. The perfect summer activity.
The idea came to Kupfer years ago when she was inspired by witnessing sidewalk sales in other towns. “It brought the community together; friends were walking around the street shopping, smiling, drinking coffee and going out for lunch together,” Kupfer told The Jewish Link.
From this Monday, July 29 through Friday, August 2, Teaneck will be home to its inaugural sidewalk sale from State Street down to West Englewood.
It will feature eateries including Cafe Demi, Jus by Julie, Chopstix, Schnitzel Plus and World of Goodies. Schnitzel Plus has promised a free can of soda with a purchase during the sale and Chopstix will be giving a free eggroll to anyone with a proof of purchase from any retail store on the block.
The sale will include other retailers as well. Clothing stores such as Suede and Co, Emporio; The Suit Lady; and Gigi and Lo will also be selling their wares, along with Maayan Judaica, “your source for everything Jewish”; the 198 The Plaza Art Gallery, the Jewish art hub; the hat boutique Solene; The Purple Bow; the math tutoring center Mathnasium and, of course, On the Table.
Although Kupfer has arranged a seasonal sidewalk sale for her own business over the past few years, this year she felt the need to organize one on a larger scale. “I think people realize that Teaneck is a community, and we have to act like a community, and we have to thank our customers and our patrons for supporting us,” Kupfer said. “Everyone came together to support our businesses during Covid and we want to support our customers. This is a way that we can give back to our customers and be part of the community and bring people together.”
Even though the sale will be 30%-80% off on select items, Kupfer emphasized its value as a social opportunity. “I always think it’s important even if customers aren’t necessarily looking to shop, to just come and browse and be part of the community, come take a snack, take a bottle of water, enjoy time with friends, just be on the street and have fun. If you find something that you like, that’s even better.”
In regards to the future, Kupfer is optimistic. “I hope that this is the first of many sidewalk sales, and that it just grows every year and gets bigger and better in years to come.”
