In last week’s issue of The Jewish Link, Martin Polack, wrote a letter discussing why one should not vote for Congressman Josh Gottheimer (“Why Do We Love Congressman Gottheimer?” September 8, 2022). Unfortunately, his letter is full of factual inaccuracies. To say that Republican Candidate Frank Pallotta is better for Israel than Gottheimer is incorrect. Pallotta has done very little for Israel. He has a nice position paper on his website, but the lack of accomplishments speaks for itself.
Gottheimer has heavily supported Israel and recently led a bipartisan mission to Israel with 12 members of Congress, half Republicans and half Democrats, sponsored by the American Israel Education Forum. If Mr. Polack would have come to hear Cong. Gottheimer speak at the AIPAC-sponsored event in Teaneck, he would have heard of the outstanding accomplishments of this trip.
The congressman does not support the Biden Iran deal. To condemn Mr. Gottheimer because he is a Democrat is absurd since he is a leader of bipartisanship. Voting for Washington DC to be a state is not to increase Democrats, it is to give the residents the opportunity to vote in national elections. This is an old issue.
His facts on the two impeachments for Donald Trump are also wrong. The first impeachment trial was in 2020 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. It was based on Trump’s phone call to President Zelensky of Ukraine to investigate Burisma, promising a face to face meeting with him. Trump illegally held up the Congress approved aide to Ukraine until Zelensky agreed to do the investigation.
The second impeachment was in 2021 for Trump’s inciting an insurrection by his supporters who besieged the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Ten republicans also voted to impeach Trump, including Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger who are on the congressional committee that has shown how Trump planned and tried to attend, advanced the false lies of the stolen election, and tried to overthrow our democracy. Did Mr. Polack conveniently forget the horrific scenes of the armed insurgents attacking the members of Congress, staff and Capitol police? I resent Mr. Polack quoting Megilat Esther and the Radak for political purposes.
Josh Gottheimer’s record on Israel and his work with both republicans and democrats demonstrates that he must be re-elected to Congress.
