Each year, around Chanukah time, I write about a sheitel gemach called the “Sheitel Shuffle” that we proudly collect for year round. The Sheitel Shuffle is a very important and much-needed gemach. A few years ago, while I was a guest at a Shabbat meal, a friend connected me with Staci Segal, otherwise known as the “Sheitel Fairy Godmother.” Staci’s mission has become collecting wigs to give out to Orthodox women in need.
I would like to thank all my readers, as well as our fabulous and generous community who have kindly donated several sheitels over the years. Staci sends me many heartfelt and appreciative text messages from the women who benefit from this gemach. If you have an older sheitel that you no longer use, we are continuing to collect them, and you can even receive a tax deduction for your donation.
As an aside, since we have started collecting for the gemach, many of my clients have brought me bags of wigs. Together with the client, we assess each wig and decide which ones will work for the woman once it is given a wig makeover (a fresh color and cut), and which ones will no longer work, but can be beneficial for someone else. Many of the donated wigs no longer suit the client but are still in good condition, so they can be given to someone else in need.
For convenience, we have set up a gemach box at Sari’s Wigs, located in Teaneck. When the box is full it is sent to the Sheitel Shuffle for distribution. Then every wig is washed and set by a volunteer, so that every recipient feels beautiful, which is the Sheetal Shuffle’s No. 1 goal!
To encourage more sheitel donations, Sari’s Wigs will be gifting $100 off of a new wig, including the just-released new line of air-dried wavy lace-top wigs, from now until December 16 only. (Not to be combined with other promotions or previous sales.) I am so excited to be celebrating Chanukah with my family in Israel (December 19-26), so please plan ahead and purchase your Chanukah gift early this year!
