The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize seventeen-year-old Dani Berlin as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Bruriah senior has been an integral part of the Bruriah basketball teams that have won an interstate tournament and made it to the post-season in each of the seasons she has played. Coach Susan Rifkin told the JLNJ, “Dani stepped into a starting position as a freshman because of her beautiful outside shot and ability to rebound against even the toughest opponent. She has developed into a committed, reliable leader and senior co-captain. The team feeds off of her warmth, good energy, and high basketball IQ.”
Dani congrats on another amazing season with the Bruriah Lightning, being a four year starter is very impressive.
Who would you say are your role models?
My parents, because they are always so selfless, and they taught me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
Bill Russel, because he transformed the game of basketball into a defensive game, and didn’t only focus on scoring.
Do you have a pregame routine?
Before games, I usually drink a lot of water, stretch, and my co-captain and I have a pregame handshake that we do before each game.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Playing in the Highland Park recreational basketball league when I was in first grade.
Looking back, what is your favorite sports memory?
In ninth grade my basketball team was invited to the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy basketball tournament in Maryland. It was memorable because not only did we come in first place, but throughout that weekend, I was able to spend time with my teammates and coach, and meet kids from different schools I’ve never played before.
What are some of your favorite thing to do when you’re not playing ball?
Hanging out with friends, running and jogging
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
I am constantly able to challenge my skill and ability, and I have the opportunity to learn new things about myself and my teammates.
