The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize Max Borger as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The nine-year-old Yeshivat Noam fourth grader is new to Bergen County but has already left a mark as one of the shining starts on the TABC junior hockey Rutland Redwings team. On Sunday November 8th, the Redwings won 4-3 to string together their second consecutive win after a 0-3 start to the season. Max opened up the first period with 2 goals and an assist, and combined with teammate Eli Knapp for all four goals. This was the first time Borgers and Knapps played together in 23 years (when their fathers played for Hillel together in 1992).
Max, welcome to Teaneck and congrats on a great game.
Who do you look to as a role model?
My dad. He always finds time for me even though he works very hard.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
N.Y. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. He is super athletic, pretty new to the NFL and has been able to make an impact from the very beginning. Odell is an explosive player who is always fun to watch.
What is your pregame routine?
Warm ups in my basement against my little brother Ami and playing with my neighbors on the Rutland Redwings.
What is your earliest sport memory?
Going to my first Giants game with my dad and my best friend, Josh Zinkin, from Edison N.J. The Giants beat the Bills (and some drunk fans taught me words I wasn’t allowed to repeat at home).
What is your favorite sports memory?
My first goal playing ice hockey in Princeton, N.J.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
I love watching football on Sundays and bike-riding. I like to travel with my family to new and interesting places.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
I’m really enjoying my rookie season in TABC junior hockey and being in Teaneck. The sports here are great.
Great job Max!
