The Jewish Link of Bergen County and Gotham Burger would like to recognize 16-year-old Max Mayerhof as this week’s sportstar of the week. Max was named MVP at last month’s Oren Grunbaum tournament and is a key contributor on the 9-1 Frisch junior varsity basketball team, which is advancing to the semifinals next week.
When asked about his floor general, Frisch junior varsity Coach Dovey Forman told The Jewish Link, “Max is a true leader at point guard; his court vision and basketball IQ are second to none. What really sets Max apart is his ability to make all the players around him better.”
Max, congratulations on another stellar season at Frisch. Who would you say is your role model?
My role model is my dad. He was a really good high school basketball player and I’m striving to be even better than he was. After every game, in the car ride home, my dad gives me constructive advice and tells me all the things that I should have done better throughout the game.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
My favorite athlete is Kobe Bryant. He was extremely intense, determined to win and succeeded in doing so. No matter what obstacle Kobe encountered, he managed to push through in order to succeed.
What is your pregame routine?
My pregame routine is to listen to music and to go through a dynamic warm up in order to prepare for games. I usually scout out the opponent and try to focus on how we can use their weaknesses to our advantage.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory is playing basketball in my driveway on a low hoop. I remember trying to shoot my shots and not being able to hit any of them. After days of practice and becoming stronger, I was finally able to consistently score on that mini hoop.
What is your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory was avenging my sixth grade championship loss by bouncing back and winning in our seventh and eighth grade championship game. We suffered a really tough loss. I used this loss to help motivate my teammates to want to win the next championship even more. This made the championship wins so much more meaningful.
What is the funniest thing that happened to you while playing sports?
The funniest basketball moment was in middle school, when my friend accidentally shot at the wrong hoop but luckily he missed.
What do you like to do when not running the Frisch offense?
My favorite thing to do during my free time is usually playing basketball or hanging with friends. My friends and I hang out if we are not busy.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best part about being a sports star is being a part of the Frisch basketball team and being able to compete in the sport I love most.
The Jewish Link and Gotham Burger Sportstar of the Week will receive a $10 gift certificate to Gotham Burger. Please send nominees for future Gotham Burger sports stars of the week to [email protected].
