The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize 13-year-old Noa Berkowitz as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Noa, pulled a Willis Reed last week. She surprised all the fans in the BPY gym when she walked out on the court in the MGBL 678 girl’s championship game. Noa suffered a serious injury earlier in the season and her team Columbia Cardiology made it to the big game, but having her there on Sunday helped them defeat a very talented Chosen Healthcare squad.
When asked about Berkowitz’s effect on the team and the game, Columbia Cardiology coach Channan Vogel told the JLNJ, “Noa is a player that every coach would want on their team. In addition to her athletic ability and drive to succeed, she is a true leader on and off the court. Often, you can see Noa offering encouragement and advice to her teammates who enjoy playing with her. Noa’s personality really shines through when she leads the team chant in the huddle.”
Noa, who is one of your favorite athletes?
Amare Stoudemire. Although he is extremely talented and has reached a very high point in his career, he always strives to learn more and to improve his game.
Who is your role model?
My grandfather, Ezra Berkowitz, is a Holocaust survivor and someone I look up to for many reasons. If you ask him how he is doing he always responds “grateful” no matter the situation, and he truly means it. He also makes family a real priority and even has a special nickname for each of his grandchildren.
Do you have a special pregame meal?
Cream cheese sandwich on a challah role and a mini Snapple.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Hitting the game winning foul shots in a basketball game.
What can we find you doing when you are not playing sports?
Hanging out with friends.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Being part of a successful team and working together to accomplish a common goal.
