Gov. Christie Signs NJ Law Allowing Parents 15 Days to Name Babies

(JLNJ Staff) Governor Chris Christie signed into law last week a bill that allows parents with religious concerns 15 days to submit a name for their newborn child, rather than the five days they were allowed previously. This legislation eases the emotional and legal burden on families who wish to wait until after their son’s brit mila to officially register his name with the state of New Jersey. In the past, such boys were merely given the name “Baby,” and parents were then required to submit name change forms with the state, with a municipal fee attached. This new law allows parents to take birth certificate forms home from the hospital and submit them to the municipality within the requisite 15-day period, without the inconvenience of name changes or additional fees.
