From the founder of Gun For Hire, Anthony Colandro’s book entitled “Crime Proof”:
The Cooper Color Code Situation Awareness System is a must read.
Colonel Jeff Cooper invented the original color code system. We can use the same system as the country uses for national security for our home planning, home defense and overall mentality.
There are four states of awareness that a person can be in. Most people live their lives at the lowest level of awareness, completely unaware of their surroundings, mulling along, typing on their phone and looking towards the ground.
This lowest condition of awareness is called “Condition White.” You’re in your house, all the doors are locked, the alarm system is on, and your loved ones are watching a movie in the living room. This is when your body can wind down to “Condition White,” where you can relax and give your brain a little break. Predators love prey who are in Condition White.
The next level of awareness is referred to as “Condition Yellow.” You’re in your house, all the doors are locked, the alarm system is on, and you hear a noise outside. It’s not an organic noise; it’s a noise you’ve never heard before. Your ears perk up a bit as you become aware of a potential danger.
The third level of awareness is termed “Condition Orange.” You’re in your house, all the doors are locked, the alarm system is on, and you hear a repetitive, non-organic noise outside. The dog perks up and starts growling, and you become very aware that something is wrong outside. This is when it’s time to have a plan and be prepared.
The last level of awareness would be “Condition Red.” This is a situation of action; you must act. “Condition Red” kicks in when the bad guy puts a knife to your throat and asks you for money, or when your purse is ripped from your arm. Maybe your back door is smashed open and someone is heading towards you with intent to harm you and your family. Having a rehearsed plan is critical as your body will revert to basic survival instincts. Are you prepared?
