With nuclear talks continuing in the Korean peninsula, the Hackensack Jewish community will be welcoming Korea’s only rabbi for a special presentation.

The presentation, titled “Our Man in Korea,” will tell the fascinating story of a Jewish Orthodox couple, leaving their comfortable life in Israel and moving to an unexpected place: South Korea.

Rabbi Osher Litzman is the first-ever permanent rabbi and co-director of Chabad in the Korean peninsula. He moved to Seoul with his wife, Mussie, in 2008.

“For a Jew, life in South Korea can be quite challenging,” said Rabbi Mendy Kaminker, the rabbi at Chabad of Hackensack, who is hosting this event. “Kosher food needs to be exported from other countries. Jewish education is also not available.”

Rabbi Litzman will discuss both the challenges as well as the progress of the Jewish community in Korea, which just recently celebrated constructions of its first-ever mikvah (ritual bath).
