All too often our people are faced with acts of terrorism, anti-Semitic violence and now, “cancel culture.” In my opinion, the many different Jewish organizations charged with and/or founded on principles of defending us are too concerned with being PC and not offending their membership or donors. By this I refer to the ADL, B’nai Brith, Federations, the JCRC and the like. Where is Rabbi Meyer Kahane, z”l, when we need him?
It is on that note that I feel the urge to use this public forum to extend great hakarat hatov to Julian Edelman, wide receiver for the mediocre New England Patriots. (I have been a Jets fan since Richard Todd!) Edelman, unlike Stephen Spielberg, David Geffen, Mark Zuckerberg, Barbara Streisand and Chuck “the shomer” Schumer, is not afraid of his Jewishness and wears it on his sleeve.
Whether reacting to the Philadelphia Eagles’ DeSean Jackson posting on Instagram a quote widely attributed to Hitler, “their [the Jews] plan for world domination won’t work if the Negroes know who they were” or the Miami Heat’s Meyers Leonard calling someone “you … k**e b***h” during a livestreamed gaming session, Edelman is out there defending us and offering to teach the haters that “hate is like a virus.”
Edelman doesn’t have to do this. He can sit at home with his millions and enjoy life as best as a Brady-depleted Patriot can. Nevertheless, he is out there for us.
We can all take a lesson from Edelman to be proud to be a light among the nations. Kol hakavod to him.
