Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in his residence in Tehran, Iran, early Wednesday morning (July 31) according to Hamas and the IRGC. Hamas claimed that Haniyeh and one of his guards were killed in an Israeli raid on the Hamas political leader’s home. 

Haniyeh had been involved with Hamas since the First Intifada in the 1980s, rising through the ranks and ultimately becoming the head of the politburo in 2017. 

Israel has not commented on the assassination, telling CNN that they “don’t respond to reports in the foreign media.”
