Heichal HaTorah’s freshman class recently traveled to New York City, where they visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As part of Heichal’s mission to bring educational experiences to life, the talmidim delved into artifacts from ancient civilizations covered in their history curriculum, getting hands-on insight into artifacts and art from the past. After iyun seder, they enjoyed some recreational time at an indoor beach volleyball facility in Queens. They then traveled to the museum in New York, where students had the opportunity to explore a wide array of exhibits and collections, spanning diverse cultures and historical periods.
It was especially interesting to have Dr. Josh Strulowitz, general studies principal, and Rabbi Avi Heller, Heichal’s Tikvah history professor, connect the artwork from ancient Egyptian civilization to concepts discussed in the classroom, such as technology, lifestyle, belief systems and burial practices unique to this culture. The boys also toured the medieval weaponry and armory collection, deepening their understanding of warfare, munitions and armory advancements over time.
This engaging and eye-opening experience provided the students with a close-up overview of armor, musical instruments, photography, costumes and antiquities, fostering a newfound appreciation for ancient history.
