This past week, Heichal HaTorah’s ninth grade biology class learned all about using indicators to test for the pH level of common household solutions. An incredible array of colors were examined from the interaction of natural plant based pigments (anthocyanins) in red cabbage juice with various acids and bases in common agents. Students were able to make a prediction and determine whether a substance was an acid or base based on the color change in the indicator. They were then tasked with identifying approximate hydrogen ion concentrations and pH levels based on the color change resulting from the chemical reaction. This lab gave students a better understanding of how acids and bases impact the human body and how two strong substances can be used to neutralize the effect of one other substance. The importance of maintaining a proper pH in the human body for various life functions became clear. It was an eye opening and fun day in the lab!
