Heichal HaTorah Explores and Experiments in Chem Lab

Tenth grade Heichal HaTorah students just completed a unit on separating chemical components within a mixture, a very important skill in the fields of environmental science, pharmaceuticals and biochemistry. The techniques of dissolving various substances, filtration and evaporation were utilized in order to isolate various components of particular pre-made mixtures. Arielle Zomberg challenged her sophomore chemistry class to figure out how to separate insoluble from soluble materials using their previous knowledge of the behavior of gasses, liquids and solids. Students were instructed to calculate percentages based on final results, and identify all sources of error in the process. The students not only learned various useful lab techniques such as reclaiming a substance already dissolved in a solution, but also how different factors can affect dissolved materials, filtration and evaporation rates.
