Heichal HaTorah Explores Chaplains in Healthcare

This past week, senior talmidim in Heichal’s medical ethics seminar had a probing and thoughtful discussion with Danya Stechler, delving into some of the complex issues that chaplains encounter as intermediaries between families and healthcare professionals. The group discussed the variety of sensitive issues that tend to arise in the hospital setting, with Stechler emphasizing the chaplain’s role in the patient-family dynamic, as well as the importance of being sensitive to different cultural and religious dynamics in patients and their loved ones. Often, chaplains are called upon in times of moral conflict, particularly when addressing end-of-life care and other ethical concerns with family members. This presentation marked the culmination of a detailed unit on end-of-life care from a Jewish perspective, and the Heichal talmidim were privileged to gain insights into the supportive role that chaplains play in healthcare.
