Heichal 11th-grade physics students recently completed a month-long unit in optics with beloved rebbe and Principal of STEM, Rabbi Dr. Joel Berman. In one of their experiments, students explored the relationship between the position of a focused image on a screen and the distances between the object, the lens and the screen—an investigation into magnification and image formation. Dr Berman shared fascinating insights with the talmidim, including the idea that basic lens theory and optical principles were already known during the time of the mishna. However, optical science advanced during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Future experiments include capturing pictures of the moon using a 10-inch Dobsonian telescope and predicting lens focal lengths in different media, such as air and water.
While the optics lab was a highlight, it was just one example of the dynamic, Torah-infused science learning that takes place under Rabbi Dr. Berman’s guidance. Students across all grades and lab settings are inspired by his breadth of scientific knowledge and Torah wisdom, which brings clarity, curiosity and excitement to Heichal’s STEM program.
